Steve Hodges

Board Member and CO.C.E.O for Sustainanble Agribusiness Development

Steve joined Uganda Agribusiness Alliance as a volunteer in November 2014, a month after UAA launched. Previous to becoming Chief Executive Officer of Uganda Agribusiness Alliance in March 2022, he was Chief Operating Officer for 7 years. Prior to joining UAA, Steve did research and training in South Sudan and Uganda through his consulting business, African Agriculture Risk Management Services (AARMS.)

For over twenty years Steve has helped farmers and agribusinesses in the U.S. and east Africa to increase success by working collaboratively and managing risks. He has trained Ugandan farmer groups and bank personnel in agricultural risk management, wrote and taught course post graduate modules on agricultural risk, and did research for the Parliamentary Forum on Climate Change.

At UAA Steve has coordinated work on developing diverse national and regional multi-stakeholder platforms for avocado, Irish potato and commercial beef value chains, and on developing a private sector-driven multi-stakeholder platform on sanitary and phytosanitary standards for fresh fruits and vegetables including conducting a diagnostic mapping of SPS in Uganda and a market gap study on export markets for fresh fruits and vegetables. He developed and is leading UAA’s pilot project on coaching horticulture exporters in increasing trust and fair sharing of revenue in their networks with the small-scale producers supplying them, to the benefit of both. He also has led UAA’s work on helping groups of farmers to make their land-based agribusiness investments more responsible to both their local communities and the environment, and to increase access to agricultural finance.
